Through Barnardos Australia, we support several programs including:
Bundaleer is a trusted community hub on the Bundaleer public housing estate in Warrawong. The community experiences deep and persistent disadvantages, with significant food insecurity, low incomes and limited access to services. Our funding supports essential programs including the Food Hub, before/after school activities, homework support, parenting programs, holiday programs and crisis brokerage. The activities with children provide so much more than just a snack, or support with math homework, but develop safety, belonging and connection that build children’s sense of worth and wellbeing.
The program supports mothers in custody and post release to rebuild safe, stable relationships with their children. The program’s impact is significant: in 2023/24, recidivism among BBW participants was just 11 per cent, compared to national recidivism rates for women, many of whom are mothers, of around 54 per cent.
Barnardos supported women into stable housing post release, and all infants born after release remained safely in their mother’s care. The potential to prevent a child entering care has obvious and incredible lifelong benefits to the outcomes for children’s health, wellbeing and prosperity.
The program supports young people at risk of homelessness through casework, mentoring, and community engagement in the Sydney metro area. Our funding supports crisis support, youth activities, and the continuation of the weekly Streetwork BBQs. Through crisis support, caseworkers provide tailored help to individual young people for their unique needs with anything from housing, help finding a job or medical appointments.
Over the past years, we have supported:
The Yurungai Learning Centre in the Sydney Metro area was established to provide an after-school homework support service primarily available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children attending primary school with a focus on education and cultural activities where children receive an afternoon meal.
The program has provided a range of integrated services to support children, young people and their families, such as early learning center for children aged 2-6, practical assistance, information and in-home support for vulnerable families, one-on-one counseling for parents, domestic violence support and homelessness services.
Barnardos Australia is a leading child protection charity providing foster care, as well as family and youth support services. Guided by the belief that children are more vulnerable to abuse and neglect when families lack adequate resources to raise children, Barnardos Australia works to support those experiencing challenges, such as poverty, social isolation, mental illness, family violence and substance abuse.
